(Kidpower is a purely secular program. It is held in the Community Room for space reasons only.)

Please come work with your child.

KIDPOWER is a non-profit organization that teaches interpersonal safety and confidence-building skills to young people. The KIDPOWER approach ensures that every child practices every skill presented through carefully formatted activities and role-play.  Your child will build confidence, self-esteem and awareness in dealing with bullies, strangers and adults they know.  KIDPOWER is successful because skills are taught in a way that is not scary or overwhelming, but matter-of-fact and fun!

Kids will learn to:

«Be aware and confident

«Keep a safe distance from a stranger

«Avoid getting engaged in unwanted conversation

«Use voice and body to escape a threatening situation

«Get help from busy adults

«Deal with emotional coercion and intimidation

«Set boundaries on touch with people they know

«Deal with bullies

WHY PARENTS?     It is important for parents to have a common vocabulary with your kids so when and if safety issues come up you are able to talk to your kids in a way that is not scary or overwhelming. So please join us for this very useful and important Kidpower presentation!

COST:                   Free

Descriptive Writing

We are practicing our descriptive writing.  We learned that descriptive writing relies on the five senses.

You describe what something looks like, sounds like, smells like, tastes like, feels like, and what it does.

To become more creative we described a stuffed sheep together as a class.  Here is the paragraph we wrote:

Have you ever met a back flipping, doughnut eating, flower-selling sheep?  Well, this sheep is one of a kind!  Most sheep live on a ranch and worry about becoming a lamb chop.  This sheep lives in an apartment where her only worry is how many doughnuts she has left on the counter.  To raise money she sells flowers at carnivals and sometimes on busy street corners.  This money helps pay for her doughnuts and tap dancing lessons.  When she gets bored she starts back flipping.  You can see her doing this at the mall on an escalator because she hates to just stand there and wait.   When she walks along the sidewalk you can hear her clumpity walk.  If you hear her talk with her friends her soft British accent is soothing on the ears.  However, she was once hit by a car, so if you are walking in the street she will screech at you to stop in a high-pitched cracky choked voice.  She smells like a freshly mowed lawn.  Her favorite spot to practice back flips is in the local park where lilac bushes and roses grow.  Sometimes you can catch a whiff of the sweet floral perfume coming off her wooly self.  She gives great hugs, and she is a fabulous pillow because she feels so squishy and fluffy.  Her silky sleek face is fun to rub your cheek on while you sleep.  Her cushiony body envelops you into a comfortably cushy dream.  She feels like a flannel blanket that just came out of the dryer.  She reminds us of devouring cotton candy or vanilla ice cream.  She is so fluffy and sweet smelling that you feel like you could eat her up!  She reminds you of eating an ice cream cone at the carnival.  People love being around her because of the fun memories she brings to their minds.  She’s chubby around the edges.  All her doughnut eating has turned her into a walking cotton candy sheep.  Her white wooly fuzz reminds us of a sugary popcorn ball.  Her light pink face and stubby legs are plush.  Three bows are a fashion statement of this sheep.  The largest bow is an orange, green, pink, and yellow plaid that is tied around her neck.  The tiniest bow is baby pink and is always next to her right ear.  The third bow is also tied around her neck, but this one is under her chin.  It is blue and white and has a tag hanging from it. Some people call her a fuzzy watermelon.  If you think you can find another back flipping, doughnut eating, flower-selling sheep, good luck!
