If a student’s behavior is dangerous, I remove the child from the group immediately to protect the child, other students, and property.
If a student’s behavior is safe, I follow these steps:
1. Student is given the chance to extinguish his/her own behavior
This gives students the first opportunity to intrinsically monitor their own behavior
2. Student is asked to state what she/he was doing.
This teaches students to take full responsibility for their actions, and provides the foundation for being more responsible.
3. Student states what his/her responsibility is.
This teaches thinking and responsibility.
4. The teacher supports the student in mastery of this new responsible behavior.
